Faby Martin and Video Interviews

Faby Martin:

If you’ve ever been to a Calgary fashion event you’ve probably seen Faby’s work, she has photographed for Calgary Fashion, Alberta Fashion Week, PARK SHOW, and Conglomerate Magazine. She is an amazingly open, honest, and real artist who focuses on exploring innocence, fragility, and movement through photography. She makes a point of staying away from wedding photography in order to maintain her artistic integrity and she definitely isn’t snobby, if that’s what you’re thinking. Make sure you check out her site by clicking here. Her work has a real authenticity to it – a truthful curiousity and appreciation for natural beauty (she prefers the organic movements of ordinary humans rather than experienced models).

Anyways, I just glorified her for a paragraph because we have a video documentary coming up shortly on the beauty of her work, so stay tuned.

I think we forgot to mention that we’re starting to explore video interviews and it all began thanks to KRUHX. So yes, we have two videos coming up shortly, KRUHX and Faby Martin.

Below are Boyhood’s favorite shots by Faby (all pictures are from www.FabyMartin.com):

FABRICATED

Well we’re a little behind on our blogging, and let’s be honest here but it hasn’t been our biggest priority as of late. But we did get a lot accomplished! We filmed an interview with the genius fashion photographer Faby Martin; we attended Fabricated, which was hellz good and one of the best local fashion events we have experienced (we’ll comment more on that later); we headed out west to Vancouver Fashion Week, and we signed up for twitter.

Fabricated:

Heck yes! Fabricated was exactly what Calgary needed – an event created by the designers for the designers. I can name a few things in our city that focus more on the money and less on the designers and art, and Fabricated definitely had their priorities straight.

Fabricated was 60% fashion show, 30% mixer, and 10% trunk show. As cool as it was to have local designers/jewelers selling at the event, the crowd was a bit disinterested in the idea of shopping and more fixated on drinking. I would have appreciated the trunk show more if the jewelers participated in the fashion show, which would give the audience a deeper visual connection with the jewelery pieces.

There were four clothing labels featured on the runway: Peeko Apparel, Apiana Que, Jalu, and KaaDiki.

Peeko Apparel

Peeko Apparel focused on exploring the combination of texture, movement, and colour via textile. We enjoyed the various head pieces used to accessorize the outfits.

Apiana Que

Apiana Que focused on feminine, flowing, and delicate open-back pieces with an attention to the movement in fabric, however there was a lack of attention to the fit and detail.

Jalu

Jalu focused on grey, and brown tones incorporated into a style that reminded us of Lord of the Rings Elves combined with the ominous elusiveness of Little Red Riding Hood. Jalu focused on long hoods, long flexible sweaters tied with leggings, maxi dresses, and shoulder pleats. My favorite part about Jalu’s clothing is that it’s unisex! I would love to see on the street a male wearing a long hooded sweater with tight jeans or sweats.

KaaDiki

Of all four designers, KaaDiki proved to be the most experienced and knowledgeable in regards to quality and attention to detail. KaaDiki focused on mens wear, which I think Calgary definitely under appreciates.

I definitely appreciate how the show focused on local designers, and providing them exposure to Calgary’s growing fashion community. The fashion show itself was a bit awkward in some parts, specifically with some models, timing, and music, but it was definitely a good first show. Kudos to the Fabricated team.

I’d like to mention that we have over 1200 shots of Fabricated and we have to cut it down to about 30 pictures. FUN TIMES.

FABRICATED

Andrea, editor of ANTLER magazine, has released the first issue of FABRICATED magazine, which is a pre-cursor to FABRICATED‘s fashion event on April 16. The magazine provides in-depth interviews and beautiful pictures of the event’s designers. Our buddies at KRUHX produced the promo pictures and they are featured in the magazine! Boyhood Uniformity also got in on the photo credit action with a little picture we took of KRUHX at the Fashion Industry Mixer; it’s definitely not the best quality picture but hey, we love photo creds! ahah.

FABRICATED is going to be stellar because the organizers have put their heart and soul into making the event extraordinary. The event will feature a runway show of up-and-coming Calgary designers and creative thinkers, as well as a trunk show of local artists. It is led by the amazingly cool duo of Hadija and Brook Fung (PEEKO APPAREL). If you’re in Calgary and have an interest in fashion, then definitely check out FABRICATED – it will be worth every dollar spent.

Downtown with Rae Spoon

While walking along Stephen Avenue, we spotted singer/songwriter Rae Spoon, who was in town for the TransCanada Alberta Music Series. Actually it was his monogrammed leather flap backpack and fur flap hat that caught our eye.

A Well Respected Man

When I saw these two men below I thought of the song “A Well Respected Man” by the Kinks. I love the combination of the pocket square, rolled up khakis, elbow pads, brown leather belt, tie, and the one buttoned-up blazer with the little window at the bottom of the blazer. The thing I love most about men’s fashion is the subtle details that change the entire look. These two men definitely are an example of how little things make the most impressionable outfit.
